Polk County Community Foundation provides support to the Tryon Garden Club

Since 1948, the Tryon Garden Club has been taking care of the Depot Garden at the corner of Depot and Pacolet Streets in Tryon. When the State of North Carolina reconfigured these streets to reduce the width of Depot Street and extend the watering system into a newly installed storm sewer, two sunny ‘bump-out’ areas were created that connect to the existing shady Depot Garden.

 The Tryon Garden Club Civic Beautification Committee received permission from Tryon Town Manager, Joey Davis, and the Tryon Parks Committee to assume responsibility for these two areas. The Garden Club committee developed a planting plan. The theme is a sun-loving native plant garden for all seasons that will attract bees, butterflies and birds and be attractive to all of us as well.

 Funding for the project was made possible through a Polk County Community Foundation Kirby Grant. The Kirby grant money has been used to amend and improve the existing soil, extend the watering system, purchase native plant materials, and hire professional landscape services.

 Garden Club members have provided and planted sun-loving perennials from their own gardens. Tom Ziegler Landscaping helped in soil preparation and planting shrubs. Native plants have been purchased locally and at Southeastern Native Plant Nursery in Candler, N.C. Thompson Landscaping fixed the water system. On June 17, Sandy and Bob Sammons planted two Weeping Yaupon hollies to complete the native garden plan.
